Host: Alright, are you ready to go?
Kobe Bryant: I’m ready to go. I feel a
little underdressed.I just came from the basketball court.
Host:We want you say hi
to everybody first. We’re online with Tedx, There’s going to be millions of
people watching you here. We want you say hi to everybody.
Kobe Bryant: I want to say hello and thank
you for tuning in, you guys, thank you for being here. And thank you for having
me here. I truly appreciate it.
Host: We’re super excited to have KobeBryant, all star , MVP, world champion, NBA champion here. We are at ShanghaiTower, really behind us, this is like, you know, a futuristic, they call this the Eye ofShanghai,we are at the 126th floor. No one’s ever been up herebefore running an event, this is kind of like an anti-compression earthquake,so we’re safe up here. We are going to have fun today. What do you think thatlooks like?
Kobe Bryant: That’ll work.
Host: I think it’s from back to the future,
like flux capacitor, something, right?
Kobe Bryant: Sure, that will work.
Host: So today let’s start off with
something I want to talk about because, you know, we have a whole lot to get
into but my think is that a lot of people here haven’t seen you since that last
game on television. That was crazy. 60 points. Are you kidding me? 60 points.
Did everybody seen that last game? Who saw that last game? You know, for people
in LA,or in the States, they watch that live at seven at night. We watched
way early in the morning. You know, so you global fans are on smart phones, on
tablets, every way which you can, we were cheering, we were watching that and
we were super excited. Let bring us back there because that will lead us into
what we are talking about today. Because it’s the mamba mentality. That last
game came out of nowhere, man.
Kobe Bryant: Yeah, pretty much. You know,
it’s, for me it was just like the end of a really long, beautiful journey. I
started playing the game of basketball since I was two, right? So for this to
be the moment, this is the last game for me to come out and perform in front of
my fans, in front of my home crowd, in front of my family, it was really
exciting, it wasn’t any pressure. I wasn’t sad or anything like that, it was
like, this is awesome, let go out there and put on a show one more time.
Host: You’ve been doing this for twenty
years, I’m sure you don’t get nervous. Were you nervous before this game?
Kobe Bryant:No, I wasn’t
nervous. I was excited. Like, I was ready to go. You know? I was ready to go. And
I saw my family right before we ran out on the court and I looked at my wife, I
looked at my kids, and I said to my kids:“ let’s go put on a show one more
time, is that ok? ” And they said, ”Yeah!” It was fun, It wasn’t nervousness or
anything like that.
Host: First shot didn’t go in.,second shot
didn’t go in. Third shot didn’t go in. Fourth , fifth and sixth, and then, all
of a sudden, buckets. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom!
Kobe Bryant:Well, I mean, it
makes it, it makes the journey worthwhile. You know what I mean? Because you go
through moments, when you have that adversity, and you got to figure your way
through it. So like the start of the game, I actually just had to start
laughing at myself after a while, after I missed like the fifth shot in a row.
This is pretty funny. This game could be like, I could either turn it around or
it is going to be absolutely horrendous. Be the worst last game ever! So, from
that point I said, I’m comfortable. This is either going to be the worst last
game ever or it’s going to be the best last game ever, but I don’t want
anything in between.
Host: So that leads me to ask, because that last game, you’ve been doing something you’ve been doing since you were four, five years old. It’s not about the physical, because you’ve done this a million times. You’ve practiced the left hand pull up midrange, the right hand pull upmidrange, the step back, the pivot, the reverse pivot, you know, attacking, going at different angles, you've been doing that. So it's not about physicalness, because that's all engrained. Was that last game just fully mental? Just fighting through it and saying, look, I just, I've got to do this.
Kobe Bryant:Yeah, it was. No, because I was ready to play. I was excited to play. And once the game started it became the norm. It became reading defensive situations, positioning of my teammates, you know, just over all strategy and tactics. And it felt good to get back to that, you know? Because that's the part of that game that I enjoy the most.
Host:The mindfulness of the game.
Kobe Bryant: Yeah, it's like a puzzle. You have to figure out what pieces go where, and that's the enjoyment in the game.
Host: I think that's what we're leading here to today in our Tedx talk.
The power of mind.
