One Cigarette
by
Edwin Morgan
No smoke without you, my fire.
After you left, your cigarette glowed on in my ashtray
and sent up a long thread of such quiet grey
I smiled to wonder who would believe its signal of so much love.
One cigarette in the non-smoker's tray.
As the last spire trembles up,
a sudden draught blows it winding into my face.
Is it smell, is it taste ?
You are here again, and I am drunk on your tobacco lips.
Out with the light.
Let the smoke lie back in the dark.
Till I hear the very ash sigh down among the flowers of brass
I'll breathe, and long past midnight, your last kiss.
My partners, as well me, give some commentaries about it, which we hope they would help you understand it better. And we hope them are helpful to you.

When I first read this poem, to be honest, I did not know what the author wanted to express. However, after I read it again and again, I found some beauties in it.
First, the topic is really unique. One cigarette is a ordinary thing which is easy to be ignored, but the author gives it human's feelings and makes it vivid.
Second, the language is beautiful. For example, "Till I hear the very ash sigh down among the flowers of brass" ,which is unique and ingenious.
Last but not least, I would like to say something about my understanding of this poem. I think the author seems to descripe the cigarette, but in fact, the author is missing his lover or wife, and
cigarettes is a symbol which stand for the lady he misses.
@张嘉毅
In my opinion, a cigarette refers to a lover's cigarette. The author seems to be expressing his feelings for his lover and missing her. He shows his delicate feelings through the detailed description of cigarette ash. Besides, he also expressed some complex and tangled feelings in this poem.

I think this poem is about love and miss. His sweatheart left him and only left for him a extinguish cigarette in his ashtray. Maybe they have some arguments, so his lover left because of anger. However, from this poem, we can see he loved she very much.Because of love, he imagined the cigarette that his lover smoked as his lover who he missed very much. His lover's flavour had left on this cigarette, so when wind blowed this cigarette' smell on his face. He dreamed that his lover kissed him. Therefore, cigarette here symbolizes the man's lover. It is the medium of the male character's love.
Today' sharing is going to the end.If you have any kinds of problems, pleaseleave messages in below comment section. We would answer you as possible as we can. See you next Friday.
