D17 super hard
The first is you need to work, if you, depending on how well you want to do.
Particularly if you're starting a company, you need to work super hard.
So what does super hard mean?
Well, when my brother and I were starting up our first company, instead of getting an apartment,we just rented a samll office.
We slept on the couch.
We shower on the YMCA.
We're so hard up.
We had just on computer.
The website was up during the day and I was coding at night, seven days a week. all the time.
And I briefly had a girlfriend at the period.
And in order to be with me, she had to sleep in the office.
So I work hard like at every waking hour.
That's the thing I would say particularly if you are starting a company.
And if you do simple math, say like, if somebody is working 50 hours, andy you're working 100, you'll get twice as much done in the course of a year as the other company.
D18 think different
Here to the crazy ones !
The misfits !
The rebels !
The troublemakes !
The round pegs in the square holes !
The ones who see things different !
They're not fond of rules, and they have no repesct for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can't do is ingore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, the ones who do.
D19 I always knew I was going to be rich
I always knew I was going to be rich.
I don't think I ever doubted it for a minutes.
Einstein is reputed to have said that Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world, or something like that.
And it goes back to that story, you probably learned when you were in grade school.
Where somebody did something for the King.
And the king said, what can I do for you?
And he said, well , let's take a chessboard, and put one kernel of wheat on the first square, and then double it on the second, and double it on the third.
And the king readily agreed to it, and by the time he figured out what 2 to the 64^th amounted to , he was giving away the enitre country.
So it's a pretty simple concept but over time, it accomplishes extraordinary things..
D20 Compund interest
And very early, probably when I was seven or so, I took this book out of the Bensen Library, called "A thousand ways to make a thousand"
And one of the ways in this book was having penny weighting machines.
I sat and calculated how much it would cost to buy the first weighing machine, and then how long it would take for the profit from that one to buy another one.
And I would sit there and creat these compound interest tables to figure out how long it would take me to have a weighing machine for every person in the world.
I had everybody in the country weighing themselves ten time a day.
That allowance when I was a little boy was a nickel a week.
But I liked the idea of having a little more than a nickel a week to work with.
And I went into business very early.
I started sell Coca-Cola door to door.
I sold gum door to door.
I sold "Saturday Evening Post", "Liberty" magazine, "Ladies home Journal" you name it.
I think I enjoyed the game almost right from the start.
But I like being my own boss.
That's one thing I liked about delivering papers.
Nodody was bothering me at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning.
I was delivering 500 papers a day.
And I made a penny a paper, but in terms of compounding, that penny has turned into something else.
D21 Method of learning
Alfred North Withehead said it one time that the rapid advance of civilization came only when man invented the metod of invention.
And of course he was referring to the huge growth of GDP per capita and all the other good things that we now take for granted and before that all was satsis.
So if civilization can progress only when it invents the method of invention, you can progress only when you learn the method of learning.
I was very lucky.
I came to the law school having learned the method of learning and nothing served me better in my long life than continous learning.
And if you take Warren Buffett and watched him with a time clock, I would say half of all the time he spends is sitting on his ass and reading.
And a big chunk ot the rest of the time is spent talking one on one, either on the telphone or personally, with highly gifted people whom he trusts and who trust him.
In other words,it looks quite academic, all this wordly success.
