Why I joined an English reading club?
At first, I love English.
I became interested in English when I took part in an English summer camp at 18 years old. My pretty, patient teacher prepared many activities for us in which only speaking English was permitted. Those activities, such as watching English movies, playing English games gave me too much fun at that time.
Second, I have some regretful memories about English. Then I went into college, I applied being a volunteer to make a difference with my effort. I succeed passing the interview and at last went to Egypt to finish a project. In Egypt I met so many friends who came from other countries, they were prominent, we liked each other, but when we wanted to talk about some deeper issues, I found it was difficult since I didn’t have enough ability to express my opinion.
Third, it is a necessary mission now. I intend to pass GMAT next year, so I had better improve my English to make sure I can get a satisfied grade
I wouldn’t take part in a reading club, had I not seen the article which mentioned Eric and his English learning method. Then I followed his wechat and in the last few months I had read many articles written by Eric with whose opinion I was agree. I thought he was sharing with us a practical method which was suitable for adults to learn English. And I was happy to find such a group which could give me a guidance to read, answer my questions about reading, and motivate me by bonus. So I decided to join the reading club.

阅读进度把握:
在上周的复盘笔记中我说要调整一下阅读的侧重点,一要保证阅读速度,二要加强长难句/复合句的理解。但是这周下来,我发现当注意力放在语法、句子结构上时,我的阅读速度不可避免的下降了。这就说明自身的英语底子还是太薄,分析句子结构耗费过多时间。一天20页的阅读量能完成已是勉强,稍微提点难度就不行了。
但是学习的过程就是由难到易,熟能生巧。因此难啃的部分还是要啃,只不过在时间和精力分配上做调整。新的一周,我的计划为:平日阅读着重速度,标注生词和重点句子,前面精读,后面根据剩余学习时间调整为泛读。周末做复盘笔记着重语法(分析结构与积累相同表达),重点生词,写作练习。
语法,复合句赏析:
(一)本周发现了非常多的倒装句。其中不少难住了我,能明白大概意思,但是没有能力做到解析。现整理如下

3. Each of these separately would not have been enough of a personality to ruin an empire, had it not been for the weak-minded emperors under whom they came into power.
原型:…to ruin an empire, if it had not been for the weak-minded emperors…
4. The men in power at the time were not “great” enough for this job, nor did he think that there were other talents in the country who could be called into power.

重点单词
1. industrious 勤奋的
Eg: She thinks I am industrious that I wake up at 6:00 every morning to learn English.
2. In the name of 以…的名义
Eg: How many political crimes have been committed in history in the name of” the people”, the modern reader can well appreciate.
3. Characterize
我们平时中文交流讲的“谁谁谁说他怎么怎么样”,这个“说”,英文表达总是不知道用哪个词,这个词就最合适。如文中Su Shun characterized him in a rhetorical flourish as”dressed in a barbarian’s robe and eating the food of pigs and dogs.” 记得前面几章也曾出现过这个用法。
4. Administrative 管理的,行政的
文中大量出现administer,这个对应的形容词需要注意一下。
5. Run to 达到,发展到
Run以前以为只有跑的意思,用在这个句子里感觉很妙” Wang also kept a diary, running to seventy volumes.”感觉有道词典给的“达到”失去了点原文的意境,没有那种动感了。
6. Great
这个词第一眼看到也没反应过来。一直都觉得只有单词使用,是“棒极了!”的意思。原文是”perhaps the competition of great scholars at the capital was too great for him, for there were…” 形容当政的学者都太厉害了,王安石在学识、声望上都不如他们。
7. Quote 引用
文中出现两次,P101 he quoted an ancient scholar…和P137 quoting Confucius,… 这个词很实用,以前只会用as sb. Said, 感觉不高级
8. Memorable 值得纪念的
It was a memorable night, the only one which I felt my mother’s support and love to me.
9. Succeed 继承
看到succe..就想到成功,原文P104 successor和succeed都是继承的的意思。
