But the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest component. Every word that serves no function, every long word that could be a short word, every adverb that carries the same meaning that’s already in the verb, every passive construction that leaves the reader unsure of who is doing what these are the thousand doing what—these are the thousand and one adulterants that weaken the strength of a sentence. And they usually occur in proportion to education and rank.但是好的写作的秘诀是把每句话都带到最清楚的部分。每一个没有任何功能的字，每一个可以变短的长难词，每一个使万千读者不确定他们正在读什么的被动结构被动结构——这些所有的冗杂，都会削弱一个句子的力量，并且他们通常和教育以及等级排列成比例。
