Chen Tianqiao, the founder of Grand Group, donated $115000000 in 2016 to set up a Brain Research Institute at the California Institute of Technology. As for Chen Tianqiao, that is the first step to fund the research on brain science. According to Chen Tianqiao's plan, he will cooperate with more universities to set up brain research institutes in the second stage. In the third stage, Chen hopes to establish a university, "There are varieties of majors in this university, including philosophy, psychology, theology, physics, chemistry, neurology and so on. Apart from this, maybe we will even do psychological research related to Zen Relaxation, such as sitting in meditation, mindfulness etc.." Except leaving 2%-3% of the money to children, Chen plans to contribute all of his assets. In the Hurun China Rich List in 2016, Chen Tianqiao and his wife ranked 81st with 23000000000 RMB.

Accepting the Chinese Philanthropists’ interview, Chen quoted the words from his wife Mrs. Luo,“The biggest distinction between philanthropist and entrepreneur is that there is no competition.” He added "I want to promote the development of brain science and make breakthroughs in the research. Besides , I will be delighted if there's another person, like Ma Huateng, who's willing to donate all of his money to the brain science. Because I merely long to know the secret of the brain. It's the motivation that drives me forward. As a result, my ultimate goal is not to make money. I overflow with joy for the reason that someone has come by my side to settle the problem. However，doing business is not the same. Of course, currently we all continue to lay stress on the relationship between competition and cooperation, as well as how to jointly make it bigger and so forth, all of which belong to short-term mutual benefit. In the long run, competition is inevitable, because social resources are limited. But what is the beauty to be a philanthropist? No competition. Every person who is interested in charity is your friend."

盛大集团创始人陈天桥2016年捐款1.15亿美元，在美国加州理工学院成立脑科学研究院。这是陈天桥资助脑科学研究的第一步。按照陈天桥的规划，第二阶段，他会和更多大学合作，分别设立脑科学研究所。第三阶段，陈天桥希望创办一所大学，“这所大学里，会有哲学、心理学、神学、物理、化学、神经学等专业，甚至可能展开对打坐、正念（Mindfulness）等禅修相关的心理学研究。”除了留下百分之二到百分之三的钱给孩子外，陈天桥计划把自己的资产全部捐出去。2016年的胡润百富榜中，陈天桥夫妇以230亿财富排名第81位。

接受《中国慈善家》采访时，陈天桥引用太太雒芊芊（luòqiān qiān）的话说，慈善家和企业家最大的区别在于没有竞争。“我希望能够推动脑科学发展，取得突破性研究成果，如果有另外一个人，比如马化腾，他也愿意把钱全部捐出来做脑科学，我只有高兴。因为我就是想知道这个奥秘，这是驱使我的动力，我的目的不是盈利。有人跟我一同来解决这个问题，我很开心。但做企业就不一样。当然我们大家现在不断地说竞合关系、共同把它做大啊什么的，都是属于短期的互利，长期来看，竞争是必然，因为社会资源是有限的。但是做慈善家美妙之处在哪里？没有竞争。每一个感兴趣的人都是你的朋友。”
