Chapter 4-2: Loneliness
"Do you want a friend?" someone asked him, but Wilbur couldn't see anyone who was talking to him. "I will be your friend." Wilbur asked who it was and the voice told him that it was just up over him. The voice asked Wilbur to sleep and he would see who it was the next day. It was hard for Wilbur to sleep because his stomach was empty and his mind was full. He woke many times during the long night. He listened and looked around in the darkness. The barn was quiter than ever and he asked the busy rat and the goose who was hatching her eggs if they heard anything strange. They didn't give him a certain answer. In the morning, Wilbur couldn't help speaking loudly to his invisible friend, disturbing the other animals. Just before he was going to give up, the thin voice came out again. Following the order, Wilbur looked up and saw a big spider swung in the air. She told Wilbur that her name was Charlotte and she wanted to be his friend.
