Some people think that private companies should not be allowed to carry out any technology. Only the government can do it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that human beings have been pumping massive money in technological advances over the decades. Although some technologies concerned with world security should merely be researched by the government, I believe that private businesses’ involvement in the research of certain technologies should be allowed.
Private companies’ involvement in the research of some technologies should be constrained. If some profit-driven organizations were allowed to freely conduct biological or nuclear experiments, there would be devastating outcomes. For example, rather than being researched and developed by private companies, nuclear technologies are controlled by the government in almost every country. This is due to the fear that such nuclear technologies may fall into extremists’ hands and then they are likely to produce nuclear weapons like atomic bomb to plot terrorist attacks.
However, there are financial and technological arguments in support of private companies partly getting involved in the research of technologies. Firstly, some for-profit business can take out an enormous amount of application cost of technologies. For example, the launch cost of rockets such as Space X Falcon 9 and Blue Origin New Shepard has become lower and lower since America’s government allowed private companies to research commercial rockets. Secondly, profit-driven organizations’ involvement can accelerate the pace of technological advances. It is the competition between Microsoft and Amazon that makes big data and cloud computing technologies develop and apply rapidly.
In conclusion, I admit rather than being completely banned in technological research, profit-driven organizations getting involved in the research of certain technologies does more good than harm.
