Today is Wednesday.
Pippi said that just like she had said that the teacher had known the answer. The teacher decided to act as if nothing unusual were happening and went on with her examination. She asked Pippi how much eight and four were. Pippi's answer was seventy-seven. The teacher told her the correct answer was twelve. Pippi said that the teacher had just said five and seven were twelve. She thought there should be some rhyme and reason to things in school. And she told the teacher if the teacher could sit down in the corner by herself and do arithmetic, she and the students could play tag. The teacher decided there was no point in trying to teach Pippi any more arithmetic. She began to ask other students the arithmetic questions. She asked Tommy to answer a question, which was if Lisa had seven apples and Axel had nine apples, how many apples did they have together. Pippi interrupted to ask Tommy to tell her if Lisa got a stomachache and Axel got a stomachache too, whose fault it was and where they got hold of the apples. The teacher pretended that she hadn't heard and turned to Annika and asked if Gustav was with his schoolmates on a picnic and he had a quarter when he started out and seven cents when he got home, how much he spent. Pippi said she indeed wanted to know why he was so extravagant and if it was pop he bought and if he washed his ears properly before he left home. The teacher decided to give up arithmetic altogether.
