The Fellowship Of The Ring: chapter1  A Long-Expected Party

  When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End annouceed that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence,there was much talk and exitement in Hobbiton.

 Bilbo was very rich and very peculiar, and had been the wonder of the Shire for sixty  years, ever since his remarkable disappearance and unexpected return.The riches he had brought back from his travels had now become a loal legend,and it was popularly believed,whatever the old folk might say,that the Hill at Bag End was full of tunnels suffed with treasure.And if that was not enough for fame,there was also his prolonged vigour to marvel at. Time wore on,but it seemed to have little effect on Mr. baggins.At ninety he was much the same as at fifty. At ninety-nine they began to call him well-preserved;but unchanged would have been neaer the mark.There were some that shook their heads and thought this was too much of a good thing;it seemed unfair that anyone should possess(apparently) perpetual youth as well as (reputedly) inexhaustible wealth.

 "It will have t be paid for ,"they said."It isn't natural,and trouble will come of it!"

   当住在底袋洞的Bilbo先生宣布他将不久之后庆祝他的一百一十岁的生日，并为此举行一个特殊而华丽的派对时，各种议论声与兴奋之情便久久地充斥在霍比屯里了。

 Bilbo，作为一个很有钱，脾气又相当古怪的霍比特人来说，他已经成为夏尔最最让人津津乐道的人物之一了。从他那神奇的消失，再到他意想不到的回归，就足以说明这一点。

    经过外出冒险之后，他带回来巨大数量的财物使他一下子成为了当地的传奇人物。对于这堆数之不尽的财物的由来，在当地被广为流传且被大多数人相信的一种说法儿是：Bilbo住的底袋洞的小山丘里挖满了各种隧道，且隧道里充满了宝藏。

     当然啦，如果这不算能使人出名的原因的话，还有一个让他闻名于众的原因。时间在分分秒秒中逝去，但就算是长久时间的力量反映在Bilbo身上的痕迹似乎只会显现出很少的一点点。在九十岁的时候，他几乎看起来和五十岁时一模一样。在九十九岁的时候，大家便开始称他是“很会保养”，但“永远不变”即将离改变的极限越来越接近。有些人则会摇着头，想着这样的好事儿已经要达到极限；以及对于其他人来说他那永远用不完的财富和得到永久年轻的能力都是很不公平的。

  “这一最终是要付出代价的，”他们说。“这一切都是很不寻常的，而不久之后祸患即将会降临。”
