The horses rush in and the clash of metal on metal begins. During ancient times, the cavalry consisted of a high percentage of many armies. Millions of animals were killed and the near naked protection on the horses led to vulnerability. The result of this made the British think. Many, many years later the tank was invented.

The Battle of Flers–Courcelette (15–22 September 1916) was fought during the Battle of the Somme on the Western Front in France, French and British, against the Germans. This was the first tank battle in history.

All the regular military weapons were used and the trench warfare began. Hours of firing shells and randomly shooting into the distance. The British had other plans. They sent in the tank. Forty-Three tanks slowly rolled over the rough terrain, carrying the soldiers to invade the German trenches. Only travelling 4 km/h, and easy to spot, the Germans began to fire in attempts to destroy the moving mountain. Alas, they failed. But, the British had problems of their own. Numerous tanks broke down and stopped working. Only a few kept running and those that did crushed the barbed wire and led Britain and France to victory.

The first idea of the tank came from armoured all-terrain fighting vehicles. Such as armoured trucks. They were invented to counter the problems of stalemate trench warfare, ultimately leading to the era of mechanized war. Going back to trench warfare. During the whole of WWI, the trench warfare was hugely popular. The only problem was that most of the artillery shells and the bullets that were fired, missed. This was a huge waste and the British Army took that into consideration. Their engineers got to work to design a heavy hitting vehicle, that would be able to transport troops over to the enemy base while losing minimal casualties.

How were tanks used? After the Triple Entente scared away the Germans, they started producing different types of tanks. Light tanks for speed, heavy tanks for durability and hard-hitting tanks to take out a large masses of the enemy. From there the Germans decided to do the same. They started stealing the British MK 1’s and using them against the Triple Entente. The battle now was much more interesting due to both oppositions having tanks.

The fast tanks, like the French Renault FT (first 360-degree rotating turret), were used to get over to good landing positions for the troops to attack. The heavy armoured tanks were used to protect the moving forces. And most tanks were just used to fire at the enemy and hope to do damage.

During the past years, the tank has evolved substantially. Now about every major military force has tanks. In WWII, Germany had the most extensive tank collection. Including the infamous Panzer. The home of tanks, Britain, has also extended their collection. The Challenger 2 patrolled at during the war at Iraq. The Americans also created their own tanks. From the inspirational MK 1 with huge treads to the agile and powerful tanks of today, the changes in technology have given us a huge boost in modern warfare.

To conclude, the invention of tanks have led to more powerful and advanced machines and is a milestone for mechanized warfare. Personally, I believe that with all these deadly machines and weapons to aid us in combat, we should be cautious and control our behaviour whilst using these types of equipment.
