PART 1 Q&A
Q1: What does Charles Bukowski’s success try to prove?
A: Charles Bukowski's success proves he was a loser, accepted it, and then wrote honestly about it. He never tried to be anything other than what he was. The genius in Bukowski’s work was not in overcoming unbelievable odds or developing himself into a shining literary light. It was the opposite. He is completely honest with himself, worst parts of himself, and to share his failing without hesitation or doubt.
Q2: What’s wrong with the conventional life advice, which is fixating on what you lack?
A: 1. The conventional life advice emphasizes your personal shortcomings and failures to already be. Only serves to remind us over and over again of what we are not, of what we lack, of what we should have been but failed to be.
2. It is fixating on what you failed instead of you lack.
Q3: Can you use your own words explaining what the Feedback Loop from Hell is?
A: You have negative thoughts about you had done something wrongs. Trying to ask yourself the reason why you have these issues and something maybe get worse. For example, I such as a loser for calling myself as a loser.
PART 2 My Perspective
This book will not teach you how to gain or achieve, but rather how to lose and let go. It will teach you to take inventory of your life and scrub out all but the most important items. It will teach you to close your eyes and trust that you can fall backwards and still be okay. It will teach you to give fewer fucks. It will teach you to not try. —Chapter 1 Don't try
The key to a good life is not giving a fuck about more; it’s giving a fuck about less, giving a fuck about only what is true and immediate and important. —Chapter 1
To not give a fuck is to stare down life’s most terrifying and difficult challenges and still take action.
PART 3 Expression
1. And as the stacks of rejection slips piled up, the weight of his failures pushed him deep into an alcohol-fueled depression that would follow him for most of his life.
pile up: to increase in quantity or amount, in a way that is difficult to manage
近义词:accumulate/ amass/ collect
e.g The work has a tendency to pile up if I’m not careful.
pile sth up: to arrange things in a pile
2. Pain is an inextricable thread in the fabric of life, and to tear it out is not only impossible, but destructive: attempting to tear it out unravels everything else with it.
inextricable: formal
1. unable to be separated, freed or escaped from:
2. two or more things that are inextricable are closely related and affect each other
e.g. the inextricable connection between language and culture
Inextricable comes from the Latin prefix in- meaning "not" and extricare meaning "unravel." Something that is inextricable cannot be unraveled. This isn't just limited to objects. Memories from childhood can sometimes be inextricable from other associations — so bound up that it is hard to separate one from the other.
fabric 我们知道有布料的意思,但原文的意思是“the fabric of a society is its basic structure, way of life, relationships, and traditions”
the fabric of sth: the fabric of a building is its basic structure, including walls and the roof
e.g. We must invest in the fabric of our hospitals and start rebuilding them.
3. No, not me, dumbass—the overcoming adversity stuff, the willingness to be different, an outcast, a pariah, all for the sake of one’s own values.
outcast:someone who is not accepted by the people they live among, or who has been forced out of their home
pariah:someone who everyone hates and avoids
4. We accept it, warts and all.
warts and all: A warts and all description or representation of a person is one that includes all the bad qualities in that person's character and makes no attempt to hide them
e.g. He tried to paint the president as he really was, warts and all.
What is striking in the new restored version is the degree to which Wolf, then still only in her early 30s, was willing to describe her country, warts and all.
