My Chinese name, Pujun, was given by my parents. For me, my name was hard to pronounce and writewhen I was younger, especially for the character Pu, some people prefer to pronounce it Pu, but others want to pronounce it Pu. My parents told me that my name carries special meanings, which Pu means anuncut jade and Jun means a unit of weight. So my parents call me Pujun that they consider me as a huge uncut jade, which I'm an apple of their eye. Speaking of my English name, Peggy, my first English teacher has given me that name in her class. However, I don't like the name. Because my friends were calling me piggy or piglet. After that, I change my English name consistently.
I want to say something interesting about Chinese names. For Chinese senior generation, they always share the same middle name with their siblings. On the other hand, some parents will ask the fortune teller for some suggestions about names of their children. For example, the fortuneteller will know your five elements followed by your birthday. If you are lack of one of the five elements such as water, you will need to have a name which contains water. For me that's a little weird, because I don't know if it makes any sense. But for parents, the more efforts they make of choosing children's names, the more they love them. And plus, children's names are carrying the best wishes from parents.
