Children are subjected to burdensome pressures socially, educationally and commercially. While these pressures on adults can be challenging and even exhilarating to some extent, they are harmful to kids. Therefore, the causes of these pressures should be analyzed and measures should be taken to reduce them.
Firstly, children are under pressure socially. At school, they are confronted with social troubles like cliques, peer pressure, or whether they’ll be bullied, teased, or left out. At home, according to a survey, divorce is traumatic for children. Also, they may be torn between the two parents. What’s worse, the children may have to assume more housekeeping tasks and responsibilities than children in two-parent families.
Secondly, there’s a widespread cultural belief that equates academic success with a high level of competence and failure with intellectual inferiority, that’s why children are anxious about grades and tests in school. Generally, they strive to excel in order to feel appreciated. By being obsessed with success, kids are afraid to fail, so they are reluctant to acquire something challenging.
Thirdly, commercial pressures on children have increased with new products are developed and advertised through various media. Children view enormous ads on television alone and increasingly are being exposed to advertising on the Internet, in magazines, and in newspapers every day, which are the sources of their commercial pressures.
Relieving children’s social, educational and commercial pressures is beneficial for their growth physically and psychologically. For one thing, teachers and parents should provide stable support for kids socially and educationally, emphasizing children's progress rather than focusing solely on grades and scores. Furthermore, children should be told that failure is a normal part of learning, rather than being pressured to succeed at all costs. For another, the government should prohibit advertising aiming at children as target consumers, which is effective in mitigating some of the negative effects of advertising on children. Consequently, children’s commercial pressures can be alleviated.
