You can find fortune cookies in a lot of Asian restaurants here in the United States. They're usually served as after-meal snacks (one for each person), when you are ready to pay for your bill. Cracking open a fortune cookie, you'll find a small piece of paper, on which there is a sentence of "fortune" that either encourages you or talks something positive.
Many think it is a Chinese thing. Well, it's not. In China, no restaurant serves it. I got my first fortune cookie from an Asian resultant after I came to the US.
The "fortune cookies" Wikipedia page is fun to read. Some people claimed that they were the inventors. In the 1900/s, people tried to fortune cookie business to China but failed, because they were considered "too American", haha.
Even so, I like the cute idea of serving these simple cookies and some good wishes to the customers. It's a simple act, but I'm sure many enjoy it. I've enjoyed exchanging the pieces of "fortune" with my friends.
