So many people enjoy drinking wine and want to know a bit more about it, but don't know where to start. Here are a few simple things to bear in mind.
You only really need one shape and size of wine glass, whatever the colour of the wine, and even champagne and stronger fortified wines can be enjoyed in your all-purpose wine glass.
2
Never more than half full
Try not to fill a glass more than half full, so that you can swirl the wine round and really enjoy the all-important aromas. They can give enormous pleasure and are free of alcohol and calories. Always consciously smell a wine!
3
Your opinion counts
There are no rights or wrongs in wine appreciation. It’s up to you, not your supposed ‘wine expert’ friend, to decide whether you like it or not.
4
Get to know your local independent wine retailer
Tell them which wines you have liked so far and it is in their interests (and yours) to guide you towards something you are likely to enjoy that may be more interesting, or a better buy.
5
Don't judge a wine by its screw cap
Some very good wine is now sealed with screwcaps because producers (and consumers) have become fed up with the taint associated with poorly treated corks. The stopper is no longer a sure guide to wine quality.
6
It pays to be unfashionable
Some of the best-value wines in the world are those that have been unfashionable, such as sweet wines and all but the most celebrated sherries and ports.
7
It's all about temperature
The temperature a wine is served at can make an enormous difference to how it tastes. Too cold and the wine won’t taste of anything; too hot and it'll taste muddy.
8
Weight matters more when it comes to food pairings.
Colour doesn’t matter as much as weight when matching wines and food. Serve rich, dense wines with flavourful foods but something lighter and fresher with more delicate dishes such as poached fish, sushi or sashimi.
9
Price does not equal quality
There is no direct relationship between price and quality. There are many overpriced and some underpriced wines out there.
10
Stick to the £7-£20 bracket
Wines in the £7-20 a bottle bracket are likely to be the best value. Less than this and it leaves dangerously little to pay for the wine itself once all the fixed costs and taxes have been paid. More than this and you can easily be paying for the winemaker's or marketeer's ambition.
