今天换了一本书,The Craft of Research, 四年后重读这本书,觉得自己很幸运。后天就要开始新的学期了,作为一个慢热的人,觉得自己就像是百公里加速需要半个小时的老破车,除了喇叭不响,哪儿都响的那种。但是加起速来之后就好啦。只要不放弃,就不会有失望。
看了书,跑了步,睡前做翻译,睡得香。
原文:
That plan for a draft helps researchers write, but created with their readers in mind, it also helps readers read.
翻译:
打草稿列大纲,学者能写得顺畅,而且做计划时心中有读者,读者也能读得痛快。
这句话看似简单,其实很容易纠结。个人习惯了剑走偏锋,所以help这种词我是觉得不会翻译成“帮助”的,也不可能翻译成“让”“使”,总觉得怪,中国人不那么说话。中文习惯主语开头,前后正好可以形成主语的对应,“学者”对应“读者”,就很顺便地用了这种结构。第二个就是对help的理解,我对help的理解是“因果关系”,相当于“if you plan for a draft, you write better.” “如果……就……”的结构,中文里又可以双双省略连接词,哈哈,那就省略掉吧。第三个难点,“but”,这里的“but”不是转折,而是递进或者并列,后面有个“also”,虽然我也是第一次见“but also”离得那么远。

翻译:

又一句看似简单,却很难用中文表述的话。第一个难点,“knowing”和“believe”的对比,“knowing”不是“知道”,而应该是“确定,肯定”。比如“You really think I can do this? I know you can do it!”第二个,“fabric of a community”,如果每个人是一根线的话,这些线交织在一起就变成了“fabric”(布),网上能查到“social fabric”,网友给的解释是“interaction between social members”,我觉得放在这里的语境下还算适用。其他的就是些小伎俩啦。

When you arrange and rearrange the results of your research in new ways, you discover new implications, connections, and complications. Even if you could hold it all in mind, you would need help to line up arguments that pull in different directions, plot out complicated relationships, sort out disagreements among experts. But it would be a feeble education that did not change you at all, and the deeper your education, the more it will change the "you' that you are or want to be. That's why it's so important to choose carefully what you study and with whom. But it would be a mistake to think that learning to write sound research reports must threaten your true identity.
