Now, my subject is success,

so people sometimes call me a "motivational speaker."
所以人们总是称我为 "激励型演讲者"
But I want you to know right up front,
但我今天开门见山地跟大家讲,
I'm not a motivational speaker.
我并不是，一位励志型演讲者
I couldn't pass the height requirement.
因为我身高不够
And I couldn't motivate anybody,
而且我，真的无法激励任何人
my employees actually call me a de-motivational speaker.
事实上, 我的员工都叫我 反励志型演讲者
What I try to be is an informational speaker.
我真正想做的, 是当一位能提供信息的演讲者
I went out and found out some information about success,
我在外收集，关于如何成功的信息
and I'm just here to pass it on.
然后我来这里分享给大家
And my story started over 10 years ago, on a plane.
故事从十年前开始, 当时我在飞机上
I was on my way to the TED Conference in California,
要去参加TED会议的途中
and in the seat next to me was a teenage girl,
有一位青少女坐在我旁边
and she came from a really poor family,
她来自很穷困的家庭,
but she wanted to get somewhere in life.
但她很想在一生中有些成就
And as I tapped away on my computer,
当我持续敲着我的键盘时,
she kept asking me questions,
她不断的问了我一些问题
and then out of the blue, she asked,
突然间, 她问说:
"Are you successful?"
你是一个成功的人吗?
I said, "No, I'm not successful."
我回答: 我不算成功
Terry Fox, my hero, now there's a big success.
我的英雄，Terry Fox, 他才是一个成功的人
He lost a leg to cancer,
他先因癌症，失去了一条腿
then ran thousands of miles
后来跑了好几千英里的慈善马拉松
and raised millions for cancer research.
帮癌症研究，募了好几百万美元
Or Bill Gates,
或是比尔盖茨
a guy who owns his own plane
他有自己的私人飞机,
and doesn't have to sit next to some kid asking him questions.

But then I told her about some of the stuff I'd done.

I love communications,

and I've won lots of awards in marketing.

I love running,
我热爱跑步,
and I still sometimes win my age group,
而且我不时，还会在我年龄组的比赛得奖
old farts over 60.

My fastest marathon is two hours and 43 minutes

to run the 26 miles, or 42 kilometers.

I've run over 50 marathons, in all seven continents.
我已经在七大洲上, 跑超过50场已上的马拉松,
This was a run my wife and I did up the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.

And to qualify for the seven continents,
为了要跑满七大洲
we had to run a marathon in Antarctica.

But when we got there,

it didn't look nice and calm like this,

it looked like this.

The waves were so high we couldn't get to shore.

So we sailed 200 miles farther south to where the seas were calm,

and ran the entire 26-mile marathon

on the boat.

Four hundred and twenty-two laps around the deck of that little boat.

My wife and I have also climbed two of the world's seven summits,

the highest mountains on each continent.

We climbed Aconcagua, the highest mountain on the American continent,

and Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Well, to be honest, I puked my way to the top of Kilimanjaro,
坦承个小秘密, 我爬乞力马扎罗山时, 一路狂吐
I got altitude sickness.
那时得了高山症.
I got no sympathy from my wife;
我老婆那时一点也不同情我
she passed me and did a lap around the top
她超过我后, 自己在山顶上跑了一圈,
while I was still struggling up there.
留我一个人努力爬上山
In spite of that, we're still together,
即使如此, 三十五年后的今天,
and have been for over 35 years.
我们还是很恩爱地在一起,
I'd say that's a success these days.
不得不说, 在现在这个社会, 这也算是成功了 (结婚很久)
So I said to the girl,
于是我跟女孩说
"Well, you know, I guess I have had some success."
我猜，我也算是有些成功的经验
And then she said, "Okay, so are you a millionaire?"
她回问我, 那你是百万富翁吗?
Now, I didn't know what to say,
当下我有点无语
because when I grew up,
在我那个年代,
it was bad manners to talk about money.
问别人赚多少钱是不太礼貌的
But I figured I'd better be honest,
但我还是诚实的回答
and I said, "Yeah. I'm a millionaire.
是的, 我是百万富翁
But I don't know how it happened.
但我不知道，我是怎么成为百万富翁的
I never went after the money,
我从来没有跟着金钱走
and it's not that important to me."
而且, 金钱对我来说，不算是那么重要
She said, "Maybe not to you, but it is to me.
她回说, 金钱对你不重要, 但对我来说很重要
I don't want to be poor all my life.
我不想一生都贫困潦倒.
I want to get somewhere,
我想有些成就
but it's never going to happen."
但我觉得好像不太可能
I said, "Well, why not?"
我说, 为什么呢?
She said, "Well, you know, I'm not very smart.
她回说, 因为我不是很聪明
I'm not doing great in school."
我在学校表现不是很好
I said, "So what? I'm not smart.
我说, 我也不聪明啊,
I barely passed high school.
我高中差点没毕业
I had absolutely nothing going for me.
什么事情对我来说, 都不是很顺利
I was never voted most popular or most likely to succeed.
从来我就不是，注定好的，人生胜利组组员
I started a whole new category, most likely to fail.
我开启了一个新的分类项目，一个最可能失败项目
But in the end, I did okay.
不过到最后, 我表现的还算不错
So if I can do it, you can do it."
如果我可以, 那你也可以的
And then she asked me the big question:
后来她问我了一个最重要的问题
"Okay, so what really leads to success?"
那你到底怎么成功的?
I said, "Jeez, sorry. I don't know.
我回答, 天呐！...我还真不知道
I guess somehow I did it. I don't know how I did it."
我最后成功了, 但我不清楚我怎么办到的
So I get off the plane and go to the TED Conference,
我下了飞机, 到了TED会议
and I'm standing in a room full of extraordinarily successful people
在那里, 整场都是非凡的成功人士
in many fields -- business, science, arts,
涵盖各个领域: 商业, 科学, 艺术
health, technology, the environment --
医疗, 科技, 环保登
when it hit me:

Why don't I ask them what helped them succeed,

and find out what really leads to success for everyone?

So I was all excited to get out there and start talking to these great people,

when the self-doubt set in.

I mean, why would people want to talk to me?

I'm not a famous journalist.
我并不是一个有名的记者.
I'm not even a journalist.
我甚至都不是一名记者
So I was ready to stop the project before it even began,
我正准备要放弃之前
when who comes walking towards me but Ben Cohen,
朝我迎面走来的是Ben Cohen
the famous co-founder of Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
大名鼎鼎 Ben and Jerry，冰淇淋的合伙创办人
I figured it was now or never.
我当下觉得, 现在不问, 以后也不会问了.
I pushed through the self-doubt,
于是我挣脱了自我疑惑的循环
jumped out in front of him, and said,
跳到他面前跟他说,
"Ben, I'm working on this project.
我现在有个新的研究项目
I don't even know what to ask you,
有点不知道如何开口
but can you tell me what helped you succeed?"
但你可以告诉我, 是什么让你，这么成功的吗?
He said, "Yeah, sure, come on. Let's go for a coffee."
他爽快地一口答应. 要我们边喝咖啡边谈
And over coffee and ice cream,
在我们享用咖啡和冰淇淋的同时,
Ben told me his story.
他告诉了我他的故事
Now here we are over 10 years later,
十年过后的今天
and I've interviewed over 500 successful people
我已经访问了，超过500位成功人士
face-to-face, and collected thousands of other success stories.
面对面的收集了，成千上万的成功故事
I wanted to find the common factors for success
我想找出这些故事之间的共同因素
in all fields,
不分领域的共同因素
so I had to interview people in careers ranging from A to Z.
所以我必须把各行各业的人，全部都访问过
These are just the careers I interviewed beginning with the letter A,

and in most cases more than one person.

I interviewed six successful accountants,

five corporate auditors, five astronauts who had been into space,
五位公司稽核员, 五位出过任务的航天员
four actors who had won the Academy Award for Best Actor,
四位演员，都得过奥斯卡最佳演员奖的演员
three of the world's top astrophysicists,
和三位世界上最顶尖的天体物理学家
six of the world's leading architects
六位世界顶尖的建筑师
and, oh yeah, four Nobel Prize winners.
还有, 四位诺贝尔奖得主
Yeah, I know it doesn't start with A,
虽然诺贝尔奖得主并非A开头 (N开头),
but it's kind of cool.
但因为很酷, 所以有必要一提
And I want to say a sincere thanks

to all the great people that I've interviewed over the years.

This really is their story;

I'm just the messenger.

The really big job was taking all the interviews

and analyzing them, word by word, line by line,
逐字逐句的分析
and sorting them into all the factors that people said helped them succeed.
然后开始按照各种成功因素分类
And then you start to see the big factors
之后最重要的那些因素, 就会现形浮出水面
that are common to most people's success.
这些因素, 每个受访者都有提到
Altogether, I analyzed and sorted millions of words.
我总共分析分类了几百万个字
Do you know how much work that is?
你可以想象，这是多么浩大的工程吗?
That's all I do, day and night -- sort and analyze.
我就这样，日以继夜的分析再分析, 分类再分类
I'll tell you, if I ever get my hands on that kid on the plane ...

Actually, if I do, I'll thank her.

I discovered the eight traits successful people have in common,
我发现了八个成功人士的共通特性
or the eight to be great.
换句话说, 八个通往成功道路上的要素
Love what you do;
1、做你热爱的工作,
Work really hard;
2、非常努力
Focus on one thing, not everything;
3、专心于一件事, 而非什么都想做
Keep pushing yourself;
4、不断鞭策自己;
Come up with good ideas;
5、想出些妙点子
Keep improving yourself and what you do;
6、精益求精
Serve others something of value, because success isn't just about me, me, me;
7、帮助他人, 因为成功并不是只有我, 我, 我...
And persist, because there's no overnight success.
8、努力不懈，因为没人可以一步登天
Why did I pick these?
为什么我选择了这些?
Because when I added up all the comments in my interviews,
因为当我把所有访问内容，叠加起来后
more people said those eight things helped them
我发现，大部分的受访者，都提到了这八个因素
than anything else.
远远超越了其他因素
The eight traits are really the heart of success, the foundation,
这八个特性，是迈向成功的基础核心
and then on top we build the specific skills
在这核心之上, 我们建构出了一些更具体的技能
that we need for our particular field or career.
运用到我们特定的领域
Technical skills, analytical skills,
技术性技能, 分析技能,
people skills, creative skills
人际关系技能，创意性技能
lots of other skills we can add on top,
还有很多很多可以加在这核心上的技能
depending on our field.
依照我们各自不同的领域
But no matter what field we're in,
不过不论我们坐落在哪个领域
these eight traits will be at the heart of our success.
这八个要素都会是帮助我们成功的核心
