• investigation指“调查”，外媒还喜欢用probe这个词。probe作名词是“探针”的意思，作动词表示“深入调查，打探”，尤其是调查别人不想让你知道的事，英文解释是 to ask questions in order to find things out, especially things that other people do not want you to know

• wipe $ from/off sth 表示“使…蒸发…”，再比如《纽约时报》关于瑞幸咖啡事件的报道是这样写的：

• tout sb as sth 是一个外刊高频词，表示“把…标榜为…，把…吹嘘为”(to try to persuade people that sb / sth is important or valuable by praising them / it)。比如《经济学人》一篇关于伦敦黑出租的文章提到：Along with red letterboxes and telephone booths, London's black taxis are touted as symbolic of the city. 和红信箱、电话亭一样，伦敦的黑出租也被当成城市的标志。

• 《经济学人》在2019年一篇文章介绍瑞幸咖啡时用的wannabe这个词，表示“效颦者，效仿名人的人”(a person who behaves, dresses, etc. like sb famous because they want to be like them)，带有贬义。原句是A recent notable arrival is Luckin Coffee, a Starbucks wannabe, which floated for $4bn in May. 我们可以通过作者的选词（如tout, wannabe）读出来《经济学人》和《金融时报》的言外之意都是瑞幸咖啡比不上星巴克。

• unrivalled [ʌnˈraɪvəld] 指“无与伦比的，无双的”(better or greater than any other)。比如《经济学人》一篇写于腾讯20周年的文章曾提到：It has rightly been nervous about expanding advertising within WeChat, though the service sees unrivalled Chinese mobile traffic of over 1bn monthly active users. 尽管微信在中国拥有超过 10亿月活跃用户，移动访问流量无与伦比，但腾讯对于在微信平台上扩展广告一直有所顾虑——这是对的。近义词还有unparalleled, peerless, incomparable, matchless等等。

• list 作动词，指“上市”，比如◇It will list on the London Stock Exchange next week with a value of 130 million pounds.它将以1.3亿英镑的市值于下星期在伦敦证券交易所上市。listed company指“上市公司”。

  • float和短语go public也可表示“上市”，比如◇The company will be floated on the stock market next year.这家公司将于明年上市。

• put sb on notice 表示“事先提醒某人”(warn someone of something about or likely to occur, often in a formal or threatening way)。

• exceptionally 指“罕见，特别”(used before an adjective or adverb to emphasize how strong or unusual the quality is)，用于强调，相当于extremely。我们以后在写作或口语中想表达“特别，非常”，就可以试着用exceptionally替换very, extremely，程度更深。比如我特别为你骄傲：I am very proud of you.👉 I am exceptionally proud of you.

• fall from grace 这里的fall既可作动词也可作名词，fall from grace指因为做了错事或者不道德的事“受冷落；失去信任，失去尊重”(If someone falls from grace, they suddenly stop being successful or popular)。比如《纽约时报》一篇关于范冰冰的文章有这样一句话：Ms. Fan, who turns 37 on Sunday, has dropped out of public view for more than three months — the victim of a sudden and precipitous fall from grace. 本周日即将满37岁的范冰冰已从公众视野中消失三个多月，名声骤然大跌。

• touch除了表示“触摸”，还可表示“达到”某一水平，相当于reach sth，比如◇The speedometer was touching 90. 速度表显示时速达 90 英里。[熟词僻义]

• the rush for the exits字面义是“冲向出口”，在这里指“抛售”。近义词还有dump. sell off。

• weigh on sb/sth 把重量压到…身上，表示“使…担忧，加重…的思想负担”(to make sb anxious or worried)。我们有时可以用weigh on sb/sth替换worry sb/sth。

  • weigh in on/with sth 字面上是“把重量放进去”，表示参与讨论、在讨论中发表有分量的意见、提出有说服力的观点，相当于add advise to sth。比如◇Cranston and others were improperly trying to weigh in on the decision.克兰斯顿和其他人都不合时宜地想在这个决定中发表高见。再比如《经济学人》里读到的一句话：Keen to show they are engaged, bosses are publicly weighing in on issues like abortion and gun control. • basher 来源于动词bash，bash本义是“猛击，猛撞”，引申为“猛烈批评，严厉批评”(to criticize someone or something very strongly)。basher指“抨击…的人”。比如《经济学人》一篇关于青少年沉迷手机的文章有这样一句话：In America—though, phone-bashers should note, not in the rich world as a whole—suicides of young people are up. 在美国，年轻人的自杀率在上升——但抨击手机的人要知道，富裕国家整体上并非如此。

• delist为list的反义词，指“摘牌，退市”，比如◇The shares dived and were delisted from the London market.该公司股票暴跌，被伦敦交易所摘牌。
