3)Understand Human’s complexity, understand ourselves
Besides Romeo , Friar Lawrence is the most interesting character in the book.Friar Lawrence is kind of predictive person as some of his words imply the character’s fate.He is a kind of father-like person to Romeo. He knows the little secret of Romeo and give advice to Romeo as he know Romeo’s impulsiveness.(Act 3 ) . He often speaks against the uncontrolled passion and love and he is definitely for moderation. However, under the request of Romeo, he still helped Romeo and Juliet married. He could have asked Romeo to have more thoughts before action. Probably he did that also with the hope that the marriage would reslove the feud between two families ( Act 3, Scene 2).
However, he did not expect that the marriage would speed up the tragedy of the young lovers. Regardless of Friar Lawrence’s advice , Romeo killed Tybalt to revenge for his friend Mercutio‘s death. Because of that, he was banished by Prince( Act 3, Scene 2) .He came up the plan of fake death by giving the poison to juliet, but unfortunately Romeo did not get the message of this plan and accidentally self-killed himself around the tomb of Juliet. The question is : Is he a holy man or a deceitful schemer?I think both.
The character in the book mirrors our life.Similar with him, most of social person holds dual identities.Friar Lawrence is like our so called "wise friend” or holy man.He hopes to make good for us , giving life advice but it turns out to be the sadness.
This is actually a very interesting topic. When else's advice conflict with self- , listen or not ? impulseness and rationalness, which will take us to the truth? Or do we just take action after the second thought?
Not just the protagonist, each character has a lot of topics behind that can be discussed. I think this is probably the wisdom of the master of literature. While students chewing the language beauty, I seem to be able to see the occurrence of this world, see everyone, including the complexity and dilemma of the self at the same time.
