Animal Farm - Chapter 2

Vocabulary

1. porker [a pig, especially one raised to produce meat ]

2.unfailing [  a : never changing or becoming weaker even in difficult times ] e.g. unfailing loyalty/support       She is known for her unfailing optimism.                                                                     

[ always providing enough of what is needed]

3. disheartened [If you are disheartened, you feel disappointed about something and have less confidence or less hope about it than you did before.] e.g. She was very disheartened by the results of the test. 

4. underfed [People who are underfed do not get enough food to eat.] e.g. Kate still looks pale and underfed.

5.gallop [ If you gallop, you run somewhere very quickly.] e.g. They are galloping around the garden playing football./ I read the book at a gallop.


Collaboration

1. The best known among them was a small fat pig named Squealer, with very round cheeks, twinkling eyes, nimble movements, and a shrill voice

2. He was brilliant talker. The others said of Squealer that he could turn black into white.  /Napoleon was... not much of a talker.

3.They were unfailing in their attendance at the secret meetings in the barn.

4. With one accord, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they flung themselves upon their tormentors.  

[ If you fling yourself somewhere, you move or jump there suddenly and with a lot of force.] [If a number of people do something with one accord, they do it together or at the same time, because they agree about what should be done.]

5. ... frightened them almost out of their wits

[You can use wits in expressions such as frighten someone out of their wits and scare the wits out of someone to emphasize that a person or thing worries or frightens someone very much.] e.g. You scared us out of our wits. We heard you had an accident.

6. After a moment or two, they gave up trying to defend themselves and took to their heels

[ If you take to your heels, you run away.]

7.  Then they raced back to the farm buildings to wipe out the last traces of Jones's hated reign.

8. Then they sang... from end to end seven times running.

9. They kicked up clods of the black earth and snuffed its rich scent.
