译文取自Jeanne Kelly和Nathan K. Mao的译本

1. 两人回头看,正是鲍小姐走向这儿来,手里拿一块糖,远远地逗着那孩子。

The two women looked around and saw that it was none other thanMiss Pao coming toward them, waving a piece of candy at the child from adistance. 

Sherry的笔记:

这里的Look around:to turn your head so that you can see sth

•People came out of their houses and looked around.

Look around 还有参观的意思:to visit a place or building,walking around it to see what is there

•Let’s look round the town this afternoon.

None other than: usedto emphasize who or what sb/sth is, when this is surprising

•Her first customer was none other than Mrs Obama.

这里的wave:to move from side to side, or to make something move like this

while holding it in the hand 挥舞,挥动;摆动,摇晃

·A crowd of football fans ran down the street waving banners.一群足球迷挥舞着横额,沿着街道一路奔走而去。

at/from a distance:from a place or time that is not near; from far away

•She had loved him at a distance for years.

2. 可是苏小姐觉得鲍小姐赤身露体,伤害及中国国体。

Miss Su felt that Miss Pao’s exposed body constituted an insult tothe body politic of the Chinese nation.

Sherry的笔记:

Exposed这里指皮肤暴露的:not covered

·All exposed skin should be covered with protective cream.

Exposed的其他用法:having no protection from bad weather 无遮蔽的;暴露于风雨中的

•The house is in a very exposed position.这间屋孤零零的,毫无遮蔽。

Constitute这里是to be or be considered as something 是;被看作,被视为

•This latest defeat constitutes a major setback for the government.最近的这次失败是对政府的一次重挫。

另一个比较熟悉的意思是to form or make something 形成;构成;组成

•Women constitute about 10% of Parliament.女性在议会中约占10%。

Body politic(视为政治整体的)全体国民,人民The body politic is all thepeople of a nation when they are considered as a complete political group.

3. 那些男学生看得心头起火。口角流水,背着鲍小姐说笑个不了。

When men students saw Miss Pao, the burned with lewd desire, and foundsome relief by endlessly cracking jokes behind her back.

Sherry的笔记:

Burn:If you burn with an emotion, you feel that emotion very strongly 心中充满(情感);受…煎熬

•They were both burning with desire.他们俩欲火焚身。

Lewd:(of behaviour, speech, dress, etc.) sexual in an obvious and rude

way 淫秽的,色情的,猥亵的,下流的

•Ignore him - he's being lewd.别理他——他是个色鬼。

•a lewd suggestion下流的建议

Crack:to make a joke or clever remark 说俏皮话;开玩笑;说笑话

•He’s always cracking jokes.他总爱说笑话。

背着某人:behind one’s back

4. 鲍小姐并未一丝不挂,所以他们修正为“局部的真理”。

But Miss Pao wasn’t exactly without a stitch on, so they revisedher name to “Partial Truth.”

Sherry的笔记:

Stitch除了线的意思还有:not a stitch 这种非正式搭配:without any clothes 一丝不挂,赤裸

•I haven't got a stitch to wear (= I have not got anything to wear)

for this party tonight.今晚的聚会我没有合适的衣服穿。

•She ran down the corridor to the bathroom without a stitch on (=

naked).她一丝不挂地跑过走廊,冲进浴室里。

5. 鲍小姐走来了,招呼她们俩说:“你们起得真早呀,我大热天还喜欢懒在床上。

As Miss Pao approached, she greeted the two women, “You’ re sureup early.  On a hot day like this, Iprefer to loaf in bed.

Sherry的笔记:

Up:not in bed 起床(的)

•Oh, I’ve been up all night, finishing my essay.噢,我一夜没睡写完了我的文章。

之前只知道loaf做名词有面包的意思,没想到还有这样的用法

Loaf:to avoid activity, especially work 懒散;(尤指)偷懒

•Stop loafing (about/around) and get on with cleaning the windows!别偷懒了,赶快把窗户擦干净!

6.好忙解释一句道:“这船走着真像个摇篮,人给它摆得迷迷糊糊只想睡。”

She hastened to explain, “This boat really moves like acradle.  It rocks you until you’re sowoozy all you want to do is sleep.”

Sherry的笔记:

Hasten:If you hasten to do something, you quickly do it 赶快,赶紧(做)

•The president hastened to reassure his people that he was in

perfect health.总统立即解释说他的身体状况非常好,让他的人民放心。

Rock:to (cause someone or something to) move backwards and forwards or

from side to side in a regular way (使)摇晃,(使)摇动

•He picked up the baby and gently rocked her to sleep.他抱起了婴儿轻轻摇着哄她入睡。

Woozy:feeling weak or ill and unable to think clearly 虚弱的;头昏脑胀的

•I was still woozy from the flu/anaesthetic/medication/wine.我仍因流感/麻醉药/药物/喝酒而感到头昏脑胀。

7. 她鄙薄鲍小姐这种作风,不愿意跟她多讲,又打开书来,眼梢却瞟见鲍小姐把两张帆布椅子拉到距离较远的空处并放着,心里骂她列耻,同时自恨为什么去看她。

Not wanting to speak to Miss Pao anymore, she opened her book

again, but from the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of MissPao pulling two deck chairs over to an empty spot some distance away andarranging them side by side. She secretly reviled Miss Pao for being so shameless,but at the same time hated herself for having spied on Miss Pao.

Sherry的笔记:

Glimpse:when you see something or someone for a very short time 一瞥;一见

They caught occasional glimpses of great birds circling.

他们偶尔会看见一群大鸟在空中盘旋。

pull over :If a vehicle pulls over, it moves to the side of the road and

stops (车辆)驶到路边

•Just pull over here, and I'll get out and walk the rest of the

way.就在这里停车吧,剩下的路我自己走回去。

Revile:to criticize someone strongly, or say unpleasant things to or

about someone 谩骂;辱骂;痛斥

•The judge was reviled in the newspapers for his opinions on rape.这位法官因其对强奸的观点被报纸骂了个狗血喷头。

spy on sb/sth :to watch someone or something secretly, often in order to discover

information about them 暗中监视;窥探

•He was spying on her through the keyhole.他从锁孔里窥探着她。

8. 书上一字没看进去耳听得鲍小姐娇声说笑,她忍不住一看,方鸿渐正抽着烟,鲍小姐向他抻手,他掏出香烟匣来给她一支,鲍小姐衔在嘴里,他手指在打火匣上作势要为她点烟,她忽然嘴迎上去把衔的烟头凑在他抽的烟头上一吸,那支烟点着了,鲍小姐得间地吐口烟出来。

Not a word of the book sank in. She could hear Fang was

smoking a cigarette. As Miss Pao held out her hand toward him, hepulled out his cigarette case and offered her one. Miss Pao held it in hermouth, and as he made a gesture with his fingers on the lighter to light it forher, she suddenly tilted her mouth upward, and touching her cigarette with theone he was smoking, breathed in. With the cigarette lit, Miss Pao triumphantly blewout a puff of smoke.

Sherry的笔记:

Sink in:终于被充分理解;终于被完全领悟When a statement or fact sinks in, you finally understand orrealize it fully.

·The implication took a while to sink in.

其中的含意要花点时间才能完全领会。

Gesture:a movement of the hands, arms or head, etc. to express an idea or

feeling 手势;姿势;示意动作

·She made a rude gesture at the other driver.她对另一个司机做了个粗鲁的手势。

Triumphant:having achieved a great victory (= winning a war or competition)

or success, or feeling very happy and proud because of such an achievement 取得巨大成功的;欢欣鼓舞的;洋洋得意的

·She emerged triumphant from the court after all the charges

against her were dropped because of a lack of evidence.对她的所有指控因证据不足被撤销后,她扬眉吐气地走出了法庭。

Blow out:to put out a flame, etc. by blowing

Puff这里做名词:a small amount of smoke, air or something

that can rise into the air in a small cloud 一小口(烟雾),一小股(空气)

•Sean blew a puff of smoke at his reflection in the mirror.尚恩朝镜中的自己喷了一口烟。

9. 就是发财做官的人,也欠大方,这县有个姓周的在上海开铁铺子财,又跟同业的同乡组织一家小银行,名叫“点金银行”,自己荣任经理,他记起衣锦还乡那句成语,有一年乘清明节回县去祭祠扫墓,结识本地人士。

even those who became rich or high officials lacked polish.  In the district a man named Chou had become wealthyfrom a blacksmith shop he opened in Shanghai. Together with some fellow villagersin the same business, he organized a small bank called the Golden Touch Bank, servingas manager himself. One year, remembering the saying about returning home clothedin glory, he chose the Ch’ ing Ming Festival to return to his district to offerobeisance at the family temple, attend to the ancestral graves, and make acquaintanceswith local notables. 

Sherry的笔记:

Polish:skill or quality 精巧;优美;精致

•It’s a lively, good-hearted film but it lacks a little polish.这部电影充满活力、用心良苦,只是缺乏一点点睛之笔。

•This is a musical with polish and wit.这部音乐剧完美优雅而又富有机智风趣。

衣锦还乡:return home clothed in glory

obeisance :obedience and respect, or something you do which expresses this 敬仰;恭敬;鞠躬,敬礼

•One by one the noblemen made their obeisances (= bent at the

waist) to the Queen.贵族们一一向女王鞠躬行礼。

Attend to:to deal with something or help someone 处理;照顾,关心

•Doctors tried to attend to the worst injured soldiers first.医生们首先努力救治受伤最严重的士兵。

Make acquaintances with:used in some expressions about

knowing or meeting people (用在某些表达方式中表示)认识,结识

•It was at the Taylors' party that I first made his acquaintance (=

first met him).我是在泰勒家的聚会上初次和他相识的。

10. 这样怨命,怨父亲,发了几天呆,忽然醒悟,壮着胆写信到家里要求解约。

Thus, bewailing his fate and feeling resentful toward his father,

he went about in a half stupor for several days. Then suddenly he wokeup, and mustering his courage, he wrote a letter home asking for release fromthe engagement.

Bewail:to express great sadness or disappointment about something 为…而悲伤;哀叹

•He bewailed his misfortune and the loss of his most treasured

possessions.他为自己遭受的不幸和失去大部分珍贵的财产而悲伤不已。

Stupor:a state in which a person is almost unconscious and their thoughts

are not clear 昏迷;神智不清,恍惚

•He was lying under the table in a drunken stupor.他躺在桌子底下,烂醉如泥。

Muster:to produce or encourage especially an emotion or support 鼓起(勇气);激起(某种感情或支持)

•She managed to muster the courage to ask him to the cinema.她终于鼓起勇气请他去看电影。

解除婚姻:release from the engagement
