A Chinese warship is believed to have been sent to spy on war games between the US, Australia, and Japan
The Australian military is monitoring a Chinese surveillance vessel believed to have been sent to spy on the Talisman Saber war games being held along the coast of Queensland. “We’re tracking it,” Lt. Gen. Greg Bilton, Chief of Defence Joint Operations, explained Saturday. “We don’t know yet what its destination is, but we’re assuming that it will come down to the east coast of Queensland, and we’ll take appropriate measures in regards to that.” He did not elaborate on the response.
He did, however, acknowledge that the Chinese ship is in international waters, where it has the right to sail and, if it so desires, conduct surveillance operations. “While the US and Australia – along with most other nations – accept this principle and grant it to China, Beijing does not extend this right to other nations in the South China Sea, where it routinely chases away foreign vessels.” China has long objected to “close-in surveillance” by the US Navy near its shores, despite the People’s Liberation Army Navy routinely doing the same.
“We’ve taken all precautions necessary to protect our critical information. The ship’s presence has not affected the conduct of the exercise,” US Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Charlie Brown told USNI News at the time. Australian military officials speaking on the condition of anonymity told local broadcaster ABC News that they suspected that a new aspect of Japan’s participation in this year’s Talisman Saber drills has piqued China’s interests.
Samsung’s next major smartphone is coming next month, but it could be more difficult than ever to convince people to buy it
Samsung’s Galaxy Note in 2011 that laid the foundation for the big-screened devices we use today. The Note popularised the concept of making mobile devices bigger while the rest of the industry was making them smaller and more portable.
With its bigger screen, included stylus, and increased memory and storage capacity, the Note proved to be a fan-favourite, especially among power users. But in 2019, it could be harder than ever for Samsung to differentiate its Note from the Galaxy S line – especially now that the Galaxy S10 comes in four different versions at various sizes and price points. Samsung typically unveils its Note around the August and September timeframe, and it looks like that will probably be the case again this year since the firm just sent out invites for an event on August 7.
Other than than Samsung’s S Pen stylus, the major differences between last year’s Galaxy S9 Plus and the Galaxy Note 9 are the latter’s slightly larger screen and battery and the option to purchase it with a lot more storage and memory than the S9 Plus. The Note 9’s screen is only 0.2 inches larger than the S9 Plus’, and the two phones otherwise offer the same functionality when it comes to important features like the camera.
Now, Samsung offers more choice than ever when it comes to its Galaxy S phones. Not only does the S10 come in the familiar standard and plus models from years past, but the company also sells a more powerful version called the Galaxy S10 5G that will be able to connect to next-generation wireless networks. The 5G-enabled model features a 6.7-inch display that’s noticeably larger than that of the S10 (6.1 inches) and the S10 Plus (6.4 inches) and a quadruple camera setup that includes a 3D depth camera. That differs from the S10 and S10 Plus, which have triple-camera arrangements that lack the S10 5G’s depth sensor. With so many choices already available when it comes to screen size, storage, and camera quality, it’s unclear what the next-generation Note will offer besides the S Pen that the S10 doesn’t already have.
5 things I wish I could tell my 20-year-old self about building wealth
1. Money is secondary: you need to think of the life you want to create – get really honest about what’s truly important to you – and find a way to weave money into it. For example, I really valued freedom and creativity in my life, so I found teaching contracts at schools that offered good pay with plenty of time off so I could travel the world. I learned that an emergency fund was necessary when I made the leap to self-employment.
2. Learning about money can be fun: learning about money can be fun if put in the right context. For example, I would have learned how to negotiate more so that I could use the extra money towards an emergency fund for when I experienced a bout of unemployment. Or found ways to utilise travel rewards so I could travel to more countries.
3. There’s no such thing as a dumb question: There are an incredible number of resources to learn about finances, including experts. But it’s up to us to apply them in our lives.
4. You can make money doing what you love: It’s about honing in on your skills and understanding that work doesn’t always have to be a grind. However, it takes know-how and the ability to see what skills are needed in the market and how to negotiate for a better salary.
5. Your health is what’s most important: Aside from physical health, I’ve learned that mental is just as, if not more important. I take time out of my day to use a meditation app and slow down in the morning to have some quiet time to myself. All of these self-care practices help give me a clearer head so that I can figure out how to use money in the best way I can to suit my lifestyle.
