Studying Abroad
Since there is expanding cultural exchange and cooperation between China and the outside world, more and more Chinese parents have sent their children to study abroad on and off for the past 20 years.
Studying abroad has many advantages. First and foremost, living and studying abroad may reshape students’ world view as students are exposed to diverse ideas and values. Schools in other countries usually launch a program for international students, which may help them to cooperate with their counterparts from various countries and get used to the new environment. As a result of communication and cooperation with others, they may always retain their curiosity to anything new. Therefore, when they get an instant success in any field, their success should partly be attributed to their curiosity.
However, there are also some disadvantages of studying abroad. The problem of the language barrier is more serious than any other problems because without understanding what the teachers say in class, students will find it difficult to catch up with others. Besides, students may find it hard to get accustomed to the customs and way of life of the local people. Therefore, misunderstandings often arise. Furthermore, the cost of living is much higher than that in their countries.
It is my view that studying abroad can increase students’ soft power. That is to say a constellation of abilities will be improved. Students can learn to be independent in a new country. They can also learn how to talk with native speakers. All in all, it’s a new start in a new place. In spite of the disadvantages, it is still worthwhile to study abroad.
