The current situation in China Ultimate is that female get less chance to hv the disc than male when they are open... Handlers esp male H trust male cutters or male H more than female even though they know sexual equality, they just throw to male unconsciously. That's interesting... Sometimes when I played as a handler in mixed game, I prefer to throw a female cutter coz i know if she is open, she has right to get that chance. And more personally thinking, i know it's hard for some females to get fully involvement in the game or become more committment if every time she just played as an unimportant role in the game only because the ratio is 43. Leting alone the dangers when male players make a play on the disc...
However, we still can see some female players played very well in mixed game in China, I think the reason is that they are much better than their female defenders...They can(esp the female players played as the main Handlers) dominate the game by their advantages. Imaging if it's 50%vs50% female players on the field, do they get the same chance to hv the disc when they are open?
This situation is no good for China womens ultimate to get strong... For the high-level female players, they haven't have too many competitors to push them practise harder, while for those average female players, they feel less sense of participation or get improvement in the game. Some new players may think it's so much fun to play in a mixed game, but after several years, you will become tiredness and doubt the devotion of it and think it's kind of meaningless. For the past few years, you went for every practise, you went with team to join every tournament. But when there is a moment you meet the female players from Japan, Singapore or TW with same playing years or same body figure, you realize how awesome a female player can be.
It's too complicated to alter the situation of sexual unequality, not only in Ultimate but also everywhere in our life and work. So we all agree with that, Mixed Ultimate is not good for womens improvement and gender practise or game can make the play more competitive, right? Sometimes, we may choose to stay at our comfort zone coz there already have someone do those for us. Maybe we are not experienced enough to be a perfect captain, but we can explore and learn and grow up.
Fortunately, we realize that and we can do something. I saw a lot of potential female players quit playing Ultimate before, that's so pity. There must be some problems happened when they played in the mixed team. Based on this, more gender practise or tournament can be a good chance to encourage female players to become the main handler, the captain, the strategy maker. Getting more girls on the leadership to play different roles can improve their commitment and sense of participation. All the team members enjoy the success and bear the result of bad-desicion or tournament failure together, thus can build the team culture.
