A firm called Wanda: China and Hollywood
The country’s leaders are keen to wield soft power: its richest man has rushed patriotically to the vanguard. Wang Jianlin’s company, Dalian Wanda, is one of China’s biggest property firms. But the flamboyant billionaire also wants to be a global entertainment mogul. This week Wanda agreed to buy Legendary Entertainment, the Hollywood studio behind “The Dark Knight” and “Jurassic World”, for $3.5 billion. It’s already snaffled two big cinema chains, America’s AMC Entertainment (for $2.6 billion) and Australia’s Hoyts (for an undisclosed sum). Mr Wang is building the world’s biggest movie-making complex in Qingdao, for $8 billion-odd, as well as dozens of theme parks across China, starting with a recently opened $2.5 billion extravagance in Yunnan, in the south-east. A possible snag: Shanghai Disneyland, said to be the Magic Kingdom’s most spectacular park outside Florida, is due to open in June. Can Mr Wang’s cash trump Disney’s cachet?
