After the spring festival, I came back to work. At the hallway of my office, I met one of my college, Wang. He is a short young man about 28 years old, he comes from Shandong province. People from there are famous of speaking too straightforward. He looked at me, and said, “ Wow, look, who is she? Wendy, have you eaten lots of delicious food during the holiday? You look fatter than before.” Fatter? Fatter?! There are 2 words you can never, never say to a woman. The first is fat, the second is wrinkle. I surveyed him coldly and said, “Young man, being fat is a trouble for a short time. But being short is a trouble for a long life.”
Yes, my hometown is shanghai.
He stood there embarrassed.
Suddenly, I felt so sorry about my behavior. I still remember when I was young, my mother told me people learn how to talk in one or two years. But they learn how to communicate all their lives, and even many people never know how to communicate all their lives.
What is a good conversation? Do we have to tell lies? When your friend is in a strange suit. You have to say it’s good?
Having a good conversation takes practice, and it is even an art form to some. It doesn’t have to be hard ,though. There are some simple steps you can take when conversing.
First of all, be confident! Being around confident people makes you feel good because their enthusiasm can be infectious. Don’t be shy, but rather, project confidence to make the other person feel comfortable. If you’re not sure what to talk about, simply ask questions to find out more about the person! What do they like to do? What did they do today or last weekend? Simple questions like this can easily spark and carry a pleasant conversation.
Make sure to listen! Listening is only half of any conversation, so pay attention to what the other person is saying. You can show you are listening by acknowledging what they say with head movements. If you’re too busy thinking about something else, or thinking about what you want to say, the conversation is not going to get far. What the other person is saying will lead to questions you can ask. In fact, it’s best to let the other person do most of the talking. They will likely not even realize they’re doing all the talking, but after the conversation, they will think of you as a good conversationalist!
It's often been said “It's not what you say, but how you say it.”
Why conversation skill is important for career growth? You may have all the necessary technical skills, the expertise and the experience that can really attest that you deserve that next promotion, but if you haven't got the conversation skills to back it up, you might miss the opportunity to level up in your career.
It is important to be able to have the conversation skills to communicate everything that will contribute for your career growth. You can't just silently plug away at your work without being open to opportunities of growth. You can actually make changes by means of using your conversation skills.
Having good conversation skills does not only give a good edge compared to your colleagues, but it will also help you gain the general goodwill of most people in your workplace. If you are as gracious with your words as you are excellent with your work, people will just naturally trust you and establish you as someone who is reliable and fun to work with. Good conversation skills ease the gaps that come between people who have little or almost nothing in common.
