My mom is the first one telling me that I should make a living on my own. Herself, however, is a stay-at-home mom for 18 years. She came out to work after I graduated from high school. Before that, she spent all her time taking care of the whole family. She was a mom, a cook, a babysitter, a cleaner…At first, I wondered why she told me that. Is it because these tiring housework upsets her? Is staying at home too boring? Is it because of her menopause? One day she told me the reason with a question: why bother to beg men for money if women can earn their own?

Someone nowadays may relate this to “feminism” or “women-empowering movement”. Well I would say such big words are flattering. Because I do not see it as a campaign of gender equality. In fact, it is about human. All share the freedom to find a job that they like. Both men and women.

There are three reasons why women should work. Firstly, working brings money. We get the money to cover our daily expenses, buy things we want, and provide a better life. Secondly, working can bring a sense of self-fulfillment. In work, we translate our knowledge and intelligence to real help. Our ability will be tested and maneuvered. Our value will be recognized. Thirdly, working keeps you in track of the time. We work and we learn. Working urges us to learn new skills. Lastly, we work because we do not know about the future. Well life is not always rosy. Imagine bad things like divorce, accident may happen in the future. Life would be very hard for women who do not have a job if unfortunate things happen.

In all, I wish that women can lead a better life in the future. We have the freedom and more importantly the capability to do what we want.
