These same networks have demonstrated strong performance in transfer learning, in which a CNN initially trained on a massive dataset that is unrelated to the task of interest (e.g., ImageNet2, a dataset of millions of common everyday objects) is further fine-tuned on a much smaller dataset related to the task of interest (e.g., medical images).
