Chapter 10: An Explosion
Charlotte hang from her web head down day and day, night and night, thinking of the plan of saving Wilbur. Fern and Avery liked to play in Mr. Zuckerman's barn, especially the swing which was the best one in the county. It was a single rope tied to the beam over the north doorway. At the bottom end of the rope was a huge knot to sit on. Avery carried his pet frog and played first, Fern the next. They swung by turns until they felt too tired to walk. Avery found Charlotte and wanted to catch it for his new pet and Fern tried to stop him. Avery stood on Wilbur's trough and slipped, breaking the rotten egg under the trough. The smell made Avery run away and Wilbur was really relieved for that Charlotte was safe at that time. Animals came back from the farm and Wilbur told them what had happened. Although the smell made them sick, they were pleased that it had saved Charlotte. Charlotte got an idea of saving Wilbur and started her weaving work on the web.
