Selfishness is the right of all of us who struggle, That such introspection is depicted in a negative way is racism in action, as if self-realization—the dreaming of dreams, the achieving of goals, the living out the rewards—is bestowed upon the modest, the unambitious, the passive, the oblivious. Selfishness needs to be reclaimed as a tool for empowerment, so that we might all one day live in a world where class can transcend race, where the color of your skin does not affect the color of your money, or the color of the upholstery on your couch. That we are selfish gives us the opportunity to gain the power so that, in time, we might be selfless. To give back what we have learned. To teach what we know, and shorten the journey for those who will come after us.
