Your Journey as a Teacher

Your journey as a teacher with UUabc starts from online registration and will go through the following procedures.

Step 1: Fill up Application

It only takes 3-5 min for you to register your basic information. If you are considered qualified candidate, you will be contacted within 3 business working days upon the submission of the documents. If you are referred by others, please fill in the referal code.

Step 2: Go through Interviews

One-on-one interview is an essential channel for teaching qualification assessment. This interview takes approximately 30-45mins, in which you will be requested to conduct a 5 min demo teaching. Candidates are expected to prepare according to the Interview Guidance.

Step 3: Take Onboarding Training

Onboarding includes 3-hour learning training materials in forms of video and documents. A formal test with at least 80% correction rate is required at the end of training.

Step 4: Platform Practicing

Platform practice is for teachers to be familiar with functions of in the teaching classroom, such as drawing tools and the rewarding system, and also to assess your actual Internet connection in the teaching mode.

Step 5: Sign E-contract

Standard e-contract in your teacher center. Together, you will receive Offer Letter via email explaining the documents you need to submit. Your starting base salary and working hours will also be clearly defined.

Step 6: Pass Probation Period

During the one-month probation period, teachers will be exposed to kids of different age groups. Our teacher manager/mentor will observe your class at least twice and evaluate your performance.

Step 7: Becoming a UUabc Teacher!

After the 6 steps above, you finally become a UUabc teacher. Here at UUabc, we pay special attention in teachers’career development as well as cultivating a global UUabc community.

We provide two methods to help our teachers to continuously improve their teaching skills including ongoing online workshop/trainings as well as class observation and feedback. Mentor Trainer will observe at least one class each month, evaluate and provide feedback. UUabc also has internal career progression plan for each teacher, and ultimately you can become a master teacher which opens doors for more management functions for our teachers.

Qualifications and Teaching Requirements

As one of the most prestigious online English educator, UUabc emphasizes on teacher quality and teacher training. We are very selective and the current hire ratio is about 5%, meaning only 1 out of 20 candidates are accepted by UUabc.

Qualifications required to be considered as a candidate:

        • Native speaker of English

        • ESL (English as Second Language) teaching experience with children

        • Bachelor degree and above

        • Must be able to work at least 4 hours/week, minimum continuous 2 hours session during              UUabc“peak hours”; and schedule should be relatively fixed for 6 months

        • Must have access to a laptop/desktop and stable internet for online teaching;

        • Have a can-do, easygoing, cooperative and professional attitude.

UUabc makes great efforts to ensure that both kids and tutors will have smooth experience, thus it is essential that a tutor has proper setup.

Basic technical requirements:

UUabc is an online English platform, which means a decent computer and fast-speed Internet connection is a must.

    • Memory: 2G or larger

    • Resolution: 1366 x 768 or higher

    • Camera definition: 720P or better

    • Headset: Logitech H340 (recommended)

    • Internet Broadband: at least 30Mbs

When teachers encounter occasional bad connection and hardware problems due to uncontrollable issues, it is usually resolved by UUabc’s technical support team and/or the teacher. However, if the situation happens repeatedly over an extended period of time (i.e., a week), UUabc reserves the right to terminate or suspend the teaching until the situation is properly solved.

Teaching Requirements

Other than technical requirement, teachers’manner, teaching environment as well as interaction with kids are equally important to create a great learning experience for students.

How Much Does UUabc Pay

We pay a much higher base rate between 18 USD to 30 USD per hour of effective teaching.

Your payment will be calculated according to the following format:

Monthly Payment = A + B + C ‒ D

      A= Effective teaching time/month * (base rate for teaching + bonus)

      B= Standby time/month *base rate for standby

      C= Reward

      D= Adjustment

A teaching hour is considered“effective time”if it meets the following requirements:

      • Teacher shows up during the scheduled time slot

      • The class starts no later than 10 min as it scheduled

      • No legitimate leave posted by students

Base rate for effective teaching rate consists of 6“pay bands”at UUabc. Teachers will be evaluated from different dimensions such as background, teaching skills and actual performance. Newly joined teachers will start no higher than level 3. There is no pay rate difference in terms of class format (i.e., one-on-one class vs. one-on-four class).

6 levels include, from the entry level and up:

• Online Instructor

    1. Level 1 (White belt)

    2. Level 2 (Yellow belt)

• Senior Instructor

    1. Level 1 (Green belt)

    2. Level 2 (Blue belt)

• Expert Instructor (Red belt)

• Master Instructor (Black belt/Master)

Teachers are evaluated every 6 months and are promoted on merit basis. The following aspects will be examined for all teachers:

    1. Customers Feedback

    2. Class Effectiveness

    3. Platform Tenure

    4. Disciplines and Professionalism

    5. Accent Neutral

    6. Teaching Experience

    7. Certifications

Standby time refers to the following three scenarios:

      1. 5 min break between two formal classes

      2. time slots opened by teachers but not booked by students

      3. time slots scheduled by students but later cancelled by students 2 hours before

          the class

Bonus:

If teachers start and complete the class on time, he or she gets bonus of 5 RMB/hour for all effective teaching time completed within this payment period.

If teachers do not ask for any leave during the whole month, he/she gets bonus of RMB5/hour for all effective teaching time completed within this payment period.

If teachers submit all reports on time and without rejection by QA, he/she gets bonus of RMB5/hour for all effective teaching time completed within this payment period.

Adjustment:

If there is no show in the class without any previous leave request and UUabc approval, the penalty is as high as (hourly rate) X 2.

Teachers outside of China get paid monthly through Paypal on a monthly basis in USD. Regarding taxes, all teachers are classified as independent contractors and are responsible for reporting all wages and paying all of their own taxes. If you’re American, you can read more at the IRS website.

Work Schedule & Hours

UUabc requests every teacher to commit minimal 4 hours per week during peak time. Newly joined teachers during probation are recommended to start with 10 hours/week.

We welcome our teachers to jointly build UUabc teacher community globally. There are several ways that you can participant and grow with us together:

1.Being a UUabc ambassador: this is a volunteer role and we will invite our teachers to support our hiring, training, job fair, marketing events and etc.

2.Working with UUabc for a specific project: UUabc is in fast growing stage and is looking for talented teachers to develop better product and experience for both our teachers and our kids. Example projects include but not limit to curriculum review and design, training school partnership development and training program design. We are launching a Hire & Train Program for Master Trainers. Please refer to Appendix xx for more information.

3.Becoming a UUabc Master Trainer. Master Trainer is the blackbelt teachers who is our champion and teacher leaders. Master Trainer program empower teachers to benefit financially from the success teachers of their cohort, who are trained and managed by Masters (for details please refer to appendix).
