To have compassion for those who suffer is a human quality which everyone should possess, especially those who have required comfort themselves in the past and have managed to find it in others.
对不幸的人寄予同情，是一种德行。谁都应该具有这种德行——尤其是那些曾经渴求同情、并且体味到同情的可贵的人。

Now, if any man ever had need of compassion and appreciated it or derived comfort from it, I am that person.
对不幸的人寄予同情，是一种德行。谁都应该具有这种德行——尤其是那些曾经渴求同情、并且体味到同情的可贵的人。如果有谁承受过他人的同情，得到了安慰，因而体味到这份情意的可贵，那么我确实算得上一个。
