Lesson 23-2
One man’s meat is another man’s poison
/wʌn/ /mænz/ /miːt/ /ɪz/ /əˈnʌðə/ /mænz/ /ˈpɔɪzn/
The idea never appealed to me very much, but one day, after
/ði/ /aɪˈdɪə/ /ˈnɛvər/ /əˈpiːld/ /tuː/ /miː/ /ˈvɛri/ /mʌʧ,/ /bʌt/ /wʌn/ /deɪ,/ /ˈɑːftə/
heavy shower, I happened to be walking in my garden when I
/ˈhɛvi/ /ˈʃaʊə,/ /aɪ/ /ˈhæpənd/ /tuː/ /biː/ /ˈwɔːkɪŋ/ /ɪn/ /maɪ/ /ˈgɑːdn/ /wɛn/ /aɪ/
noticed a huge number of snails taking astroll on some of
/ˈnəʊtɪst/ /ə/ /hjuːʤ/ /ˈnʌmbər/ /ɒv/ /sneɪlz/ /ˈteɪkɪŋ/ /ə/ /strəʊl/ /ɒn/ /sʌm/ /ɒv/
myprize plants. Acting on a sudden impulse, I collected
/maɪ/ /praɪz/ /plɑːnts./ /ˈæktɪŋ/ /ɒn/ /ə/ /ˈsʌdn/ /ˈɪmpʌls,/ /aɪ/ /kəˈlɛktɪd/
several dozen, put them in a paper bag, and took them to
/ˈsɛvrəl/ /ˈdʌzn,/ /pʊt/ /ðɛm/ /ɪn/ /ə/ /ˈpeɪpə/ /bæg,/ /ænd/ /tʊk/ /ðɛm/ /tuː/
Robert. Robert was delighted to see me and equally pleased
/ˈrɒbət./ /ˈrɒbət/ /wɒz/ /dɪˈlaɪtɪd/ /tuː/ /siː/ /miː/ /ænd/ /ˈiːkwəli/ /pliːzd/
with my little gift. I left the bag in the hall and Robert and I
/wɪð/ /maɪ/ /ˈlɪtl/ /gɪft./ /aɪ/ /lɛft/ /ðə/ /bæg/ /ɪn/ /ðə/ /hɔːl/ /ænd/ /ˈrɒbət/ /ænd/ /aɪ/
went into the living room where we talked for a couple of
/wɛnt/ /ˈɪntuː/ /ðə/ /ˈlɪvɪŋ/ /ruːm/ /weə/ /wiː/ /tɔːkt/ /fɔːr/ /ə/ /ˈkʌpl/ /ɒv/
hours. I had forgotten all about the snails when Robert
/ˈaʊəz./ /aɪ/ /hæd/ /fəˈgɒtn/ /ɔːl/ /əˈbaʊt/ /ðə/ /sneɪlz/ /wɛn/ /ˈrɒbət/
suddenly said that I must stay to dinner. Snails would, of
/ˈsʌdnli/ /sɛd/ /ðæt/ /aɪ/ /mʌst/ /steɪ/ /tuː/ /ˈdɪnə./ /sneɪlz/ /wʊd,/ /ɒv/
course, be the main dish. I did not fancy the idea and I
/kɔːs,/ /biː/ /ðə/ /meɪn/ /dɪʃ./ /aɪ/ /dɪd/ /nɒt/ /ˈfænsi/ /ði/ /aɪˈdɪə/ /ænd/ /aɪ/
reluctantly followed Robert out of the room. To our dismay,
/rɪˈlʌktəntli/ /ˈfɒləʊd/ /ˈrɒbət/ /aʊt/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /ruːm./ /tuː/ /ˈaʊə/ /dɪsˈmeɪ,/
we saw that there were snails everywhere: they had escaped
/wiː/ /sɔː/ /ðæt/ /ðeə/ /wɜː/ /sneɪlz/ /ˈɛvrɪweə:/ /ðeɪ/ /hæd/ /ɪsˈkeɪpt/
from the paper bag and had taken complete possession of
/frɒm/ /ðə/ /ˈpeɪpə/ /bæg/ /ænd/ /hæd/ /ˈteɪkən/ /kəmˈpliːt/ /pəˈzɛʃən/ /ɒv/
the hall! I have never been able to look at a snail since then.
/ðə/ /hɔːl!/ /aɪ/ /hæv/ /ˈnɛvə/ /biːn/ /ˈeɪbl/ /tuː/ /lʊk/ /æt/ /ə/ /sneɪl/ /sɪns/ /ðɛn./
