§Lesson 43 Fully insured 全保险

Q:Who owned the pie dish and why?

[endif]

[if !mso]

[endif]Insurance companies arenormally willing to insure anything. Insuring public or private property is astandard practice in most countries in the world. If, however, you were holdingan open air garden party or a fete it would be equally possible to insureyourself in the event of bad weather. Needless to say, the bigger the risk aninsurance company takes, the higher the premium you will have to pay. It is notuncommon to hear that a ship ping company has made a claim for the cost ofsalvaging a sunken ship. But the claim made by a local authority to recover thecost of salvaging a sunken pie dish must surely be unique.

[if !mso]

[endif]Admittedly it was anunusual pie dish, for it was eighteen feet long and six feet wide. It had beenpurchased by a local authority so that an enormous pie could be baked for anannual fair. The pie committee decided that the best way to transport the dishwould be by canal, so they insured it for the trip. Shortly after it waslaunched, the pie committee went to a local inn to celebrate. At the same time,a number of teenagers climbed on to the dish and held a little party of theirown. Dancing proved to be more than the dish could bear, for during the partyit capsized and sank in seven feet of water.

[if !mso]

[endif]The pie committeetelephoned a local garage owner who arrived in a recovery truck to salvage thepie dish. Shivering in their wet clothes, the teenagers looked on while threemen dived repeatedly into the water to locate the dish. They had littledifficulty in finding it, but hauling it out of the water proved to be aserious problem. The sides of the dish were so smooth that it was almostimpossible to attach hawsers and chains to the rim without damaging it.Eventually chains were fixed to one end of the dish and a powerful winch wasput into operation. The dish rose to the surface and was gently drawn towardsthe canal bank. For one agonizing moment, the dish was perched precariously onthe bank of the canal, but it suddenly overbalanced and slid back into thewater. The men were now obliged to try once more. This time they fixed heavymetal clamps to both sides of the dish so that they could fasten the chains. The dish now had to be lifted vertically because one edge was resting againstthe side of the canal. The winch was again put into operation and one of themen started up the truck. Several minutes later, the dish was successfullyhauled above the surface of the water. Water streamed in torrents over itssides with such force that it set up a huge wave in the canal. There was dangerthat the wave would rebound off the other side of the bank and send the dishplunging into the water again. By working at tremendous speed, the men managedto get the dish on to dry land before the wave returned.

[endif]People travellinglong distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go byland, sea, or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train formore than a few hours. Train compartments soon get cramped and stuffy. It isalmost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading is only a partialsolution, for the monotonous rhythm of the wheels clicking on the rails soonlulls you to sleep. During the day, sleep comes in snatches. At night, when youreally wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so. If you are lucky enoughto get a sleeper, you spend half the night staring at the small blue light inthe ceiling, or fumbling to find your ticket for inspection. Inevitably youarrive at your destination almost exhausted. Long car journeys are even lesspleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, atleast, travel fairly safely at high speeds, but more often than not, thegreater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and toomuch traffic. By comparison, fferry trips or cruises offer a great variety ofcivilized comforts. You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, playgames, meet interesting people and enjoy good food--always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no formof transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeystake a long time. Relatively few people are prepared to sacrifice up to a thirdof their holidays for the pleasure of travelling by sea.

[endif]Aeroplanes have thereputation of being dangerous and even hardened travellers are intimidated bythem. They also have the disadvantage of being tan expensive form of transport. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort. Travelling at a height of30,000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is anexhilarating experience. You do not have to devise ways of taking your mind offthe journey, for an aeroplane gets you to your destination rapidly. For a fewhours, you settle back in a deep armchair to enjoy the flight. The realescapist can watch a free film show and sip champagne on some services. Buteven when such refinements are not available, there is plenty to keep youoccupied. An aeroplane offers you an unusual and breathtaking view of theworld. You soar effortlessly over high mountains and deep valleys. You reallysee the shape of the land. If the landscape is hidden from view, you can enjoythe extraordinary sight of unbroken cloud plains that stretch out for milesbefore you, while the sun shines brilliantly in a clear sky. The journey is sosmooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. Howeveryou decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: you will arrive at yourdestination fresh and uncrumpled. You will not have to spend the next few daysrecovering from a long and arduous journey.

Lesson 41

L44-05  end 18’52”

Lesson44A  end 1:32:39

Lesson44B  begin 1:12:29

L44-06  begin 18’43”

Eg: 1. Thediscrimination agaist women is very obvious in the world.

2. Thediscrimination agaist women is especially obvious in the job of marketing.

3. Thediscrimination agaist women began in 1910.

1.    起(开篇,引出论点): at first, first, firstly, in the beginning(起初), first of all, at present(目前), nowadays, currently, to start with, to begin with

,for one thing(首先), for another(其次), in one hand 一方面, in the

2.    承: to start with, at the same time, at any rate无论如何,

之外还有,apart from, in addition, in addition to, furthermore,

in fact 事实上,actually, as a matter of fact, in reality , moreover,no doubt, without any doubt,

similarly 同样地,in the same way , meanwhile,  in the meantime, obviously明显地,particularly,

such as, forexample, for instance, consequently, as a consequence, as a result,

what is more, whatis worse, what is better

above all

L44-06  end (43-02 ) 18’43”

L44-07  begin  16’36”

3.折: after all 毕竟,终究, all

the same 虽然,但是, anyway 无论如何,

somehow, but, however, nevertheless, nonetheless, by the time 到这个时候,此时,conversely, on the contrary, despite, in spite of , in

contempt of, in disregard of, by contrast, by comparison, fortunately, in other

words 换句话说,on the other hand, unlike 和……

Eg:He made a mistake, after all he is a child aged 5.

Even though you are not of mosthelp, I’m grateful to you just the same.

I had expected myself to pass theexamination, somehow I failed.

I don’t have the ability to do thework, fortunately my friends romise me to help me.

has been noted (above) 如前所述的,as has been mentioned, as has been talkedof,

at last, finally,lastly, at length,

briefly简而言之,in brief, in short, in a word, in conclusion, in sum,

in summary, to sum up, to summarize, to conclude, on the whole

L44-07  end 16’36”

L44-08  begin  15’56”

no doubt毫无疑问,undoubtedly, truly, certainly, positively, surely, obviously,

Topic  主题

2. 定义法

What isadvertisement, it is the words or pictures on a media to promote product / thesale of product.

作业:illustrateyour opinion about advertisements on media.

Lesson 7

   illustrate your opinion about friendship

Do you have a good / large circle of friends?

I quite agree with this idea.

Eg: People oftensay that money can buy all the things, but I think it is not true.

§Lesson 45 The power of the press

Q:Does the writer think the parents were lucky orunlucky to gain prosperity in this way? Why?

[if !vml][endif]In democratic countries any efforts torestrict the freedom of the press are rightly condemned. However, this freedomcan easily be abused. Stories about people often attract far more publicattention than political events. Though we may enjoy reading about the lives ofothers, it is extremely doubtful whether we would equally enjoy reading aboutourselves. Acting on the contention that facts are sacred, reporters can causeuntold suffering to individuals by pub- lishing details about their privatelives. Newspapers exert such tremendous influence that they can not only bringabout major changes to the lives of ordinary people but can even overthrow agovernment.

The story of apoor family that acquired fame and fortune overnight, dramatically illustratesthe power of the press. The family lived in Aberdeen, a small town of 23,000inhabitants in South Dakota. As the parents had five children, life was aperpetual struggle against poverty. They were expecting their sixth child andfaced with even more pressing economic problems. If they had only had one morechild, the fact would have passed unnoticed. They would have continued tostruggle against economic odds and would have lived in obscurity. But theysuddenly became the parents of quintuplets, four girls and a boy, an eventwhich radically changed their lives. The day after the birth of the fivechildren, an aeroplane arrived in Aberdeen bringing sixty reporters andphotographers.

The rise to famewas swift. Television cameras and newspapers carried the news to everyone inthe country. Newspapers and magazines offered the family huge sums for theexclusive rights to publish stories and photographs. Gifts poured in not onlyfrom unknown people, but from baby food and soap manufactur-

ers who wished to advertise their products. The old farmhouse the family livedin was to be replaced by a new $500,000 home. Reporters kept pressing forinterviews so lawyers had to be employed to act as spokes-

men for the family at press conferences. While the five babies were stillquietly sleeping in oxygen tents in a hospital nursery, their parents werepaying the price for fame. It would never again be possible for them to leadnormal lives. They had become the victims of commercialization, for their nameshad acquired a market value. Instead of being five new family members, thesechildren had immediately become a commodity.
